An ice cream bar is a yummy frozen dessert that usually comes on a stick. It's like a candy bar but filled with ice cream! Often, it has a thin layer of chocolate on the outside. This chocolate coating helps stop the ice cream from melting too quickly and making a mess. In the UK, people sometimes call it a "Choc ice."
It's important to know that an ice cream bar is different from a popsicle. Popsicles are made from frozen juice or flavored water, but they don't have any ice cream inside.
The Story of Ice Cream Bars
Who Invented the Ice Cream Bar?
The idea for the ice cream bar came from a few different people! One popular story credits Chris Nelson. He owned a pharmacy in Iowa. In 1920, a boy named Douglas Ressenden couldn't decide if he wanted candy or ice cream. This gave Chris Nelson an idea: why not combine them?
Nelson created a chocolate-covered ice cream treat. He first called it the "I-Scream-Bar." Later, it became known as the "Eskimo Pie" (now called Edy's Pie). He received a special legal document called a patent for his invention in 1922. A patent gives someone the right to be the only one to make and sell their invention for a certain time. However, his patent was later cancelled in 1928.
Other Early Ice Cream Treats
Another inventor, Harry Burt, also played a big part in the history of ice cream on a stick. He was a confectioner, which means he made candies and sweets. According to the Good Humor ice cream company, Harry Burt invented ice cream on a stick in 1920. He also received a patent for his invention in 1923.
One of the very first advertisements for Eskimo Pies appeared in a newspaper. It was in the Iowa City Press-Citizen on November 3, 1921. This shows how quickly these new treats became popular!
