Icefire is an exciting fantasy novel for young readers, written by English author Chris d'Lacey. It was published in 2003 and is the second book in The Last Dragon Chronicles series. It continues the adventures from The Fire Within and is followed by many more books, including Fire Star and The Fire Eternal.

Unraveling the Mystery: The Story of Icefire

This book continues the adventures of David Rain. He is trying to get his book published. David also learns more about the amazing world of living clay dragons.

A New Dragon and a Special Assignment

David is upset because no one wants to publish his book. His friend Lucy makes a special wishing dragon. David names this dragon "G'reth." David's writing dragon, Gadzooks, even writes down the name.

David's landlady, Liz, offers to drive him to college. David tells Liz he might move in with Sophie. At college, Dr. Bergstrom gives David an assignment about dragons. The prize for this assignment is a trip to the Arctic! Dr. Bergstrom gives David a special charm. He says it will help David find his true path. David then sees Gadzooks write the name "Lorel."

A Snowball, a Bear, and a Mysterious Visitor

Later, Lucy makes a snowman that looks a bit like a bear. She had wished for snow using G'reth. David finds a small container in the freezer. Inside is a tiny dragon named Gruffen. Gruffen gets stuck on David's hands! Liz quickly saves Gruffen. She shows David what was in the box: a special snowball. This snowball holds magic from a dragon's tear. Liz uses it to bring her clay dragons to life.

David goes to his room and dreams about the Arctic. He gets an email from Zanna, a girl from his class. Zanna visits while Liz and Lucy are out. They go to the Dragons' Den, a special room. Zanna is amazed by a bronze clay egg. When she touches it, the egg starts to grow! David then wishes to find a special dragon tear. This wish accidentally calls Gwilanna, a powerful and tricky character.

Gwilanna's Plans and a Dragon's Birth

Gwilanna's dragon, Gretel, puts David under a spell. David goes to a meeting, and his book finally gets published! At home, Gwilanna says Liz is having a baby. She claims Zanna helped bring this baby to life. Gwilanna says it's the first boy in 900 years. Lucy sees Dr. Bergstrom turn into a polar bear. David tries to stand up to Gwilanna. But she traps him under the floorboards! David breaks free using a special item called the Tooth of Ragnar. This tooth came from a very old polar bear.

Liz has the baby, but Gwilanna uses magic. The baby is actually a dragon! When Zanna rushes in, she gets a special mark. David goes to the baby dragon. Zanna reveals she has special powers. She says she has the "Mark of Oomara." Gretel then becomes Zanna's dragon. The baby dragon flies away towards Dr. Bergstrom. David, Liz, and Zanna follow close behind.

Discoveries and New Beginnings

In Dr. Bergstrom's office, Zanna finds the baby dragon. She decides to name him Grockle. But Grockle turns back into stone. He was born without a special dragon fire. David talks to Dr. Bergstrom. He tells him the whole story of a dragon named Gawain. Grockle turns to stone, just like Gawain did.

After everything calms down, David's girlfriend Sophie moves to Africa. They break up. David tries to find Zanna. He thinks she isn't going to the Arctic trip. He also starts writing a new book. When Dr. Bergstrom comes to pick him up for the Arctic trip, David sees an extra bag. The tag says "Suzanna M." Zanna comes out of the car! David and Zanna then start a relationship.
