Story Summary

The story begins with trouble at the Pennykettle home. Lucy is suddenly taken by Gwilanna, an old enemy. Gwilanna wants to awaken Gawain, an ancient dragon, from his stone sleep. While Lucy is with Gwilanna, she starts to change. She even begins to look like Guinevere, her ancestor.

After a bear attack and hearing about Lucy, David returns home. He wants to help Liz during this difficult time. While talking with Liz, David gets some bad news. His girlfriend, Zanna, has also been taken by bears. David feels very upset. Liz calms him down with "dragonsong." This is an ancient soothing method. Guinevere used it on the ancient dragon Gawain.

While David is home, Grockle, a real dragon, wakes up. He finds the window open and flies out. No one, not even David, could stop him.

Lucy is having a tough time. One day, when Gwilanna leaves, Lucy explores Gawain's cave. She finds a secret hideaway. She thinks her ancestor, Gwendolen, used this spot. Lucy falls asleep near Gwendolen's bones. An old female bear enters the cave to hibernate. She finds Lucy and decides to guard her. Gwilanna returns and sees Lucy and the bear. She is tired and leaves them alone.

David asks Liz to tell him about Arthur. He heard the name from Gadzooks, a clay dragon. David learns that Gwilanna did cruel things to break up Arthur and Liz. So, David travels to Farlowe Island to find Arthur.

Arthur lives on a religious island. He is known there as Brother Vincent. He faces many challenges on the island. He even survives a dangerous attack by Ix, an evil Fain creature.

David arrives at the island. He calms down Grockle, who was scared and trapped by the monks. David tells Grockle to fly to the Arctic. After introductions, Arthur teaches David. He shows David how to use Dr. Bergstrom's special talisman. This talisman lets David teleport from one place to another.

The Ix arrives in the Arctic. He freezes Gwilanna in a block of ice. He also takes over Ingavar. Using his ancestor's tooth, Ix tries to destroy the island and Gawain. Grockle gets angry when his father is destroyed. He is powered by his ancestor's claw. Grockle uses his new fire to melt Ingavar. Zanna, who arrived with the bears, tells Grockle to enter the "fire star." Grockle is instantly sent to the world of the Fain, saving his life.

David teleports to the Arctic. He battles the Ix to the death. Zanna cries and runs to David. David tells her they will meet again. He gives her a Valentine's Day gift: a new dragon named G'lant. You can only see G'lant if you truly believe in dragons. David then leaves Zanna. Some polar bears take David's body on a piece of ice. Ingavar's spirit rests by David's head. The polar bears break the ice, sending David and Ingavar into the water.

Back at home, Snigger, a creature kidnapped by Gwilanna, is released back into the wild.
