Ichinobe-no Oshiwa (磐坂市邊押磐, mid-5th century-456) was an important prince in ancient Japan. He was the oldest son of Emperor Richū. He also became the father of two future emperors, Emperor Kenzō and Emperor Ninken.

It is hard to know the exact dates for people who lived during this very old time in Japanese history. However, we know that Prince Oshiwa died during the time when Emperor Ankō was ruling Japan. Emperor Ankō's time as emperor is thought to have been from the year 456 to 479.

Who Was Ichinobe-no Oshiwa?

Ichinobe-no Oshiwa was a prince from the Kofun period in Japan. This period was from around 300 AD to 538 AD. He was part of the imperial family, which means he was related to the emperors. Being the eldest son of an emperor made him a very important person.

His Family and Future Emperors

Prince Oshiwa had two sons who later became emperors of Japan. These sons were known as Prince Woke and Prince Oke. It was very important for princes to have sons, as they would continue the imperial family line.

The Imperial Line

The imperial family in Japan has a very long history. Princes like Ichinobe-no Oshiwa played a key role in making sure the family continued. His sons becoming emperors shows how important his family branch was.

A Mysterious Death

According to an old Japanese book called the Nihonshoki, Prince Ichinobe-no Oshiwa died in a hunting accident. The book says that Emperor Yūryaku was responsible for his death. This happened while Emperor Yūryaku was ruling Japan.

After His Death

After Prince Oshiwa died, his two sons, Prince Woke and Prince Oke, were adopted. They were taken in by Emperor Seinei. This was an important step that allowed them to later become emperors themselves. They are remembered as Emperor Kenzō and Emperor Ninken.
