Ide Pedersdatter Falk facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ide Pedersdatter Falk (born in 1358, died on August 15, 1399) was a very important and powerful noblewoman in Denmark. She owned a lot of land and was known for starting a special religious community called a convent.

Ide came from the Falk family, which was one of the most powerful families in Denmark at the time. Her parents were Peder Eskildsøn and Ida Olufsdatter. She got married twice. First, in 1370, she married Torkild Nielsen Bing, who passed away in 1384. Later, in 1385, she married Johan Snakenborg, a knight and landowner, who died in 1389. Ide did not have any children who lived to be adults. This meant she kept all her land and wealth, which made her a very powerful landowner in a region called Scania. Her wealth and land gave her a very strong position among the Danish noble families.

Ide's Special Will

Ide Pedersdatter Falk is famous for her will, which is like a final set of instructions for what to do with her money and property after she died. Her will showed how much she cared about other women. She gave enough money to many women so they could live independently, meaning they could support themselves without relying on others.

A Convent for Women

Ide wanted to use most of her fortune to build a convent specifically for women. She wanted this convent to be built in a place called Gladsax in Scania. A convent is a community where religious women, often called nuns, live and pray together.

Her Wish Was Changed

Sadly, Ide's wish for a women's convent was not fully respected. The bishop and the king at the time decided to do something different with her money. Instead of building a convent for women in Gladsax, they used her money to build a convent for men. This male convent was built in a different place called Gavnö in Själland.
