Who Was Idrice Goumany?
Idrice Goumany was born in Mauritius in 1859. His father, Ameer Goomany, owned a business that worked with ships. His family came from Cochin, India. His mother, Rosie Marguerite, was a Mauritian Creole. Her family had both African and French roots.
His Early Life and Studies
Idrice went to the original Royal College in Port Louis. After school, he worked for a short time in his father's business. Then, Idrice traveled to Scotland to study medicine. He went to university in Glasgow and later studied surgery in Edinburgh.
Helping During a Health Crisis
In 1888, Idrice came back to Mauritius. Soon after, a very serious illness called smallpox spread across the island. Sadly, thousands of Mauritians became very sick and died. To try and stop the illness, the government opened a special hospital. This hospital was a quarantine center at Pointe aux Cannoniers.
The person in charge of the center also got smallpox and died. Other doctors were afraid to help at the center. But Idrice Goumany bravely stepped forward. He started to manage the facility. Because of his care, many patients got better. However, within a year, Idrice also got smallpox. He died when he was only 30 years old, on July 29, 1889.
Remembering His Legacy
A primary school was named "Dr Idris Goomany Government School" in his honor. It is located on Diego Garcia Street in Plaine Verte, Port Louis. His burial place is now on the grounds of the Club Med Hotel in Mauritius. In 2017, a book was written about him by Assad Bhuglah. It is called "Dr. Idrice Ameer Goumany: The Forgotten Hero of Mauritius."
