The Iglesia de Jesús de Nazareno is a beautiful Roman Catholic church. You can find it in the town of Cudillero, in the region of Asturias, Spain. It was built in a style called neo-Romanesque. This means it looks like old Romanesque churches but was built more recently.
Building the Church
This church was built thanks to a kind person named Selgas Fortunato. He was an important historian and loved art. He helped pay for the church in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
The church was officially opened in 1914. Important guests, like Princess Isabel de Borbón, were there for the opening. This new church was built on the same spot where a much older church stood. That first church was from the late 800s!
The new church had special stained glass windows. These windows were made around the same time the church opened.
The Church's Crypt
A crypt is an underground room, often used for burials. Selgas Fortunato planned for the crypt of this church to be his family's burial place.
He placed a very old altar in the crypt. This altar was from the 700s. It was originally built by King Silo of Asturias for an even older church. Fortunato bought this ancient altar in 1905.
Two old Romanesque cancels were also kept in the crypt. Cancels are like stone screens that separate parts of a church. These also came from the old church.
In 2008, the altar and the cancels were moved. They are now kept in a room in the nearby palace.
