Ignacio Mariano Martinez de Galinsoga (born in Lorca, Toledo in 1756, and passed away in 1797) was a very important Spanish doctor. He was the personal physician to the Spanish Queen, Maria Luisa of Parma. He also directed the famous Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid, which is a big botanical garden in Madrid. Besides that, he was a member of the Spanish Real Academia Nacional de Medicina, a top medical academy.

A special group of plants, called the Galinsoga genus, was named after him to honor his work. You can also find a street named after him in a town called Vélez Rubio in Almería, Spain.

The Galinsoga Plant

The plants belonging to the Galinsoga group originally came from the Americas. They traveled across the ocean to Europe. By 1776, these plants could be found growing in the Kew Gardens in England. A few years later, by 1794, they were also growing in the botanical gardens of Paris, France, and Madrid, Spain.

Galinsoga's Book on Health

Ignacio Galinsoga was also a writer. In 1784, he wrote a book with a long title: "Demostración mecánica de las enfermedades que produce el uso de las cotillas" (which means "Mechanical Demonstration of the Diseases Caused by the Use of Corsets"). In this book, he talked about the health problems that could come from wearing corsets. He also noted that peasant women, who usually did not wear corsets, did not have these same health issues.
