Ignacio María González was born in Santo Domingo, which is now the capital city of the Dominican Republic. At the time of his birth, the island was under Haitian rule. He grew up during a period of big changes for his country.

He became involved in politics as an adult. He was part of the Green Party, which was one of the political groups in the Dominican Republic at that time.

Becoming a Leader: Supreme Chief and General in Chief

González first held powerful positions in 1874. He became the Supreme Chief of the Dominican Republic on January 2, 1874. This was a very important leadership role.

Just a few weeks later, on January 22, 1874, he transitioned to another key position: General in Chief. This showed his strong influence in both political and military matters.

Years as President of the Dominican Republic

Ignacio María González served as the 14th President of the Dominican Republic. His first presidential term began on April 6, 1874. He held this office for nearly two years, until February 23, 1876. During this time, he worked to lead the young nation.

After a short break, he returned to power as the 3rd Supreme Chief of the Dominican Republic. This term was from November 11 to December 9, 1876.

He later became president again, serving as the 18th President of the Dominican Republic. This second presidential term started on July 6, 1878, and lasted until September 2, 1878.
