Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ignacio Ponseti (born June 3, 1914, died October 18, 2009) was a doctor from Spain who became famous in America. He was an orthopedic surgeon, which means he specialized in treating bones and joints. Ignacio was born on an island called Menorca in Spain. His dad was a watchmaker, and young Ignacio often helped him fix watches. People say this skill helped him later as a doctor, making him very precise. During the Spanish Civil War, he worked as a medic, helping soldiers with bone injuries. After the war, he moved to the University of Iowa in the United States. There, he created a new, gentle way to fix a problem called clubfoot, which is now known as the Ponseti Method.

Early Life and Medical Training

Ignacio Ponseti was born in 1914 on Menorca, one of the Balearic Islands in Spain. His father was a watchmaker, and Ignacio spent his childhood helping him fix tiny, complex watch parts. This early experience taught him to be very careful and precise.

He studied medicine at Barcelona University. Soon after he graduated, a war started in Spain. Ponseti joined the medical team, helping injured soldiers. He was a lieutenant, then a captain, in the Orthopedic and Fracture Service. His job was to set broken bones, which led him to a career in orthopedics. Since there were no ambulances, he sometimes got help from local people to take injured soldiers to France.

Moving to America

After the war, Ponseti went to France and then to Mexico. For two years in Mexico, he worked as a family doctor. A doctor there helped him move to Iowa in the United States in 1941. He went to the University of Iowa to study orthopedics more deeply under a famous doctor named Arthur Steindler.

Ponseti finished his training at Iowa in 1944. He then became a professor and doctor at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Developing the Ponseti Method

Early in his career at Iowa, Dr. Ponseti noticed that the usual surgeries for clubfoot didn't work very well. Children who had surgery often had trouble moving their feet later in life. He wanted to find a better way to help these children.

He realized that babies' ligaments (the tissues that connect bones) are very flexible. He decided to create a treatment that used this natural flexibility. His new method was not surgery. At first, some doctors didn't agree with his ideas. But over the next 50 years, many doctors around the world started using his method.

Even when he was in his nineties, Dr. Ponseti kept seeing patients. He also taught doctors from other countries how to use his method. He even helped create new devices for patients and made training videos about the Ponseti Method.

What is Clubfoot?

Clubfoot is a condition where a baby's foot or feet turn inward and downward. It's a common problem that affects over 100,000 newborns every year. If not treated, children with clubfoot might not be able to walk or move properly.

How the Ponseti Method Works

The Ponseti method is a gentle, non-surgical way to fix clubfoot. Here's how it works:

  • Gentle Manipulation: A trained doctor or healthcare provider gently moves the baby's foot into a better position.
  • Plaster Casts: After the foot is moved, a plaster cast is put on, going from the toes all the way up to the groin (upper leg).
  • Weekly Changes: The casts are changed every week. Each time, the healthcare provider gently moves the foot a little more. This slowly stretches the soft tissues and bones into the correct position.
  • Brace: After the casts, the child wears a special brace. This brace helps keep the foot in the right position while the child grows.

Benefits of the Ponseti Method

The Ponseti method has many advantages over surgery:

  • Better Results: It often leads to a more normal and flexible foot.
  • Less Expensive: It costs less than surgery.
  • Accessible: It can be taught to healthcare workers who are not doctors. This is very helpful in parts of the world where there are not many doctors.
  • Global Impact: Clubfoot is the most common bone and joint problem babies are born with. About 200,000 babies worldwide get it each year, and most of them are in developing countries. The Ponseti method is used in many places, like Uganda, to help these children.

When done correctly by a trained person, the Ponseti method is considered the best way to treat clubfoot. Most children who get this treatment can live a normal, active life. Sometimes, a child might need the treatment again, or very rarely, surgery. Not following the treatment plan is the biggest reason it might not work.

In 2007, doctors from 44 countries met at a special meeting. They shared stories about 10,000 children who were successfully treated with the Ponseti method around the world.

The Ponseti International Association (PIA) was started in 2006. Its goal is to improve clubfoot treatment for children everywhere. They do this through education, research, and making sure more children can get the treatment. PIA also has a website for parents to find information and support. Groups like CURE International and A Leg to Stand On (India) work with PIA to help children.

World Clubfoot Day

World Clubfoot Day is celebrated every year on June 3. This date was chosen because it's Dr. Ignacio Ponseti's birthday. The day was started in 2013 by the Ponseti International Association.

The main goal of World Clubfoot Day is to teach people about clubfoot and how the Ponseti method can prevent disability.
