Ikatan, Alaska facts for kids
Ikatan is a small place in Alaska, a state in the United States. It's not a big city with its own government, but rather a community located in the Aleutians East Borough. Ikatan got its name from the nearby Ikatan Peninsula and can be found on Unimak Island.
A Look at Ikatan's Population
Ikatan has a short history of being counted as its own community.
Early Records
The first time Ikatan was listed by itself in the official U.S. Census was in 1950. Back then, it had a population of 29 people. This was the only time it appeared as a separate community in the census.
Part of a Larger Area
Before 1950, Ikatan's population was counted as part of a larger area called Unimak. For example, in 1930, the Unimak area had 59 people, and in 1940, it had 88 people. These numbers also included people living in a nearby place called False Pass.
Where is it Now?
By 2010, the area where Ikatan used to be is now partly located within the community of False Pass. This shows how small communities can change over time.
