The Story of Ikon
How the Band Started
Chris McCarter (who sings, plays guitar, and uses computer programs for music) and Dino Molinaro (who plays bass guitar) started writing songs together in 1988. They were high school students at the time. They loved alternative music and wanted to make their own.
The band was first called "Death in the Dark." In 1991, they changed their name to Ikon.
Early Albums and Growing Fame
Michael Carrodus joined the band as the singer. Together, they released their first two albums. These were In the Shadow of the Angel (1994) and Flowers for the Gathering (1996). These albums helped Ikon become known to fans in Europe and America. Music experts even called them important in the "gothic" music style.
Changing Sounds and New Music
After Michael Carrodus left the band in 1997, Ikon's music continued to change. Their album This Quiet Earth (1998) showed new musical ideas. It included popular songs like Subversion and Ghost in My Head.
In 2001, they released On the Edge of Forever. This album brought them back to playing live shows. Drummer David Burns and guitarist Anthony Griffiths joined the band in 1998. They helped create this album. It went back to Ikon's original rock sound.
Tours and Festivals
Ikon went on their first European tour in August 2001. After that, they were invited to play at big music festivals. These included the M'era Luna festival in 2002. They also played at Wave Gotik Treffen in 2003. They performed alongside famous bands like The Sisters of Mercy.
By 2004, the band included original members Chris McCarter and Dino Molinaro. Clifford Ennis also joined them. They released the Psychic Vampire EP that year.
Recent Music and Success
In 2005, Ikon released the album Destroying the World to Save It. Some of its songs became very popular on music charts.
Love, Hate and Sorrow, Ikon’s sixth studio album, came out in 2009. It had four singles and two music videos. One song, A Line on a Dark Day, was named one of the best tracks of 2008 by a music magazine.
Clifford Ennis and David Burns returned to the band in 2010. They released the album Everyone Everything Everywhere Ends in 2014. Their most recent album, Realm of the Black Sun, was released in 2024.
