Ilan D. Hall is a famous American chef. He is also a television personality and owns restaurants. He won the second season of the TV show Top Chef. Today, he is the owner and chef of Ramen Hood in Los Angeles.

Ilan's Early Life and Learning

Ilan Hall grew up in Great Neck, New York. His parents moved there from other countries. His father came from Scotland, and his mother came from Israel. Both of his parents were from Jewish families.

When he was a teenager, Ilan worked at a seafood store. It was called Marine Fishery. Later, he studied cooking in Italy. He also trained at the well-known Culinary Institute of America (CIA).

Becoming a Top Chef

In 2007, Ilan Hall won the second season of Top Chef. This was a big cooking competition on TV. Before the show, Ilan worked as a cook at Casa Mono. This was a Spanish restaurant in Manhattan.

During Top Chef, Ilan had a friendly rivalry with another chef. His name was Marcel Vigneron. They had even gone to culinary school together.

Opening Restaurants

In August 2009, Ilan opened his first restaurant. It was called The Gorbals. This restaurant was in downtown Los Angeles. It had to close for a short time soon after opening. This was because of a problem with its water heater. The Gorbals reopened later that year. However, it closed permanently in 2014.

In 2014, Ilan opened another Gorbals restaurant. This one was in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. In 2015, he changed the menu. He also renamed the restaurant ESH. ESH is a Hebrew word that means "fire." This restaurant closed in September 2016.

Ilan Hall opened Ramen Hood in Los Angeles in 2015. It is located at Grand Central Market. Ramen Hood is still open today.

TV Shows and More

Ilan Hall also hosted a cooking competition show. It was called Knife Fight. This show was on the Esquire Network. He hosted it for four seasons. The show ended in 2017.
