Ilfenesh Hadera was born on December 1, 1985, in Harlem, New York. She shares that her background is half Ethiopian and half white. Her father is a Tigrayan refugee. He started an organization in Harlem called the African Services Committee. This group helps African refugees. Before she became an actress, Ilfenesh volunteered with her father's organization.

Ilfenesh went to The Harlem School of the Arts to study performing. After that, she attended the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School. This school is famous for its arts programs.
