Ilka Agricola is a German mathematician. She was born on August 8, 1973, in The Hague. She studies a special area of math called differential geometry. This field looks at shapes and spaces using advanced math. She also applies her math skills to mathematical physics, which uses math to understand how the universe works.
Currently, she is a leader at the University of Marburg. She is the dean of the mathematics and computer science department. This means she helps manage and guide these important subjects at the university. She also helps share the university's collection of cool mathematical models with the public.

Her Journey in Mathematics
Early Life and Education
Ilka Agricola started her studies in physics in 1991. She went to the Technical University of Munich and the University of Munich. She studied there until 1996. After that, she spent some time in the United States. She was a guest student at Rutgers University in New Jersey until late 1997.
She then moved to the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. There, she earned her doctorate in mathematics in 2000. A doctorate is a very high degree you get after a lot of advanced study and research. Her advisor was Thomas Friedrich.
Research and Leadership Roles
From 2003 to 2008, Ilka Agricola led a research group. This group studied special types of shapes in mathematical physics. The Volkswagen Foundation helped fund this important work. She also managed projects for the German Research Foundation. These projects included research into string theory.
In 2004, she completed her "Habilitation" in mathematics. This is another advanced qualification in Germany. It allows a scholar to become a full professor. In 2008, she became a full professor at the University of Marburg.
Professor Agricola took on many leadership roles. From November 2014 to October 2018, she was the Dean of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Marburg. She also served as the president of the German Mathematical Society for 2021 and 2022. This is a big honor in the world of mathematics.
Work as an Editor
Ilka Agricola also helps share new mathematical discoveries. She is the Editor in Chief for two important academic journals. These journals publish new research papers in mathematics. They are called Annals of Global Analysis and Geometry and Mathematische Semesterberichte. Both are published by Springer Science+Business Media. She also works as an editor for the journal Communications in Mathematics.
Awards and Special Recognition
Ilka Agricola has received several awards for her work. In 2003, she got the Medal of Honor from Charles University in Prague. This award recognized her achievements.
In 2016, she received the Ars legendi faculty prize. This award is given for excellent teaching in mathematics at universities. It shows how good she is at explaining complex math ideas.
In 2022, she was named a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. This is a special title given to mathematicians who have made important contributions. She was recognized for her work in differential geometry. She also received this honor for her service to the math community.
