Ilkka Pertti Juhani Laitinen (born August 22, 1962 – died September 29, 2019) was an important officer in the Finnish Border Guard. He was a Lieutenant general, which is a very high rank in the military. From 2018 to 2019, he was the Chief of the Finnish Border Guard.
Before that, he had another big job. He was the very first Executive Director of Frontex. Frontex is the European Union's agency that helps protect its borders. He led Frontex from 2005 until 2014.
Ilkka Laitinen's Early Career
Ilkka Laitinen started working with the Finnish Border Guard in 1982. He continued his service there from 1985 onwards. He worked hard and moved up in his career. By 2004, he had reached the rank of colonel.
During his time, he held many different jobs. These jobs were both in Finland and within the European Union. His experience helped him prepare for bigger roles.
Leading Frontex
On May 25, 2005, Ilkka Laitinen was chosen for a very special role. He became the first head of Frontex. Frontex is an agency that helps European countries manage their borders. It works to make sure borders are safe and well-controlled.
He led Frontex for many years, from 2005 to 2014. This was a new and important job. He helped set up how Frontex would work and grow.
Later Life and Passing
Ilkka Laitinen retired from the Finnish Border Guard on August 31, 2019. He retired because of health reasons. He passed away on September 29, 2019, at the age of 57.
