The Illinois Envelope Co. Building is an old factory building in Kalamazoo, Michigan. You can find it at 400 Bryant Street. This important building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Today, it helps the community as the home of the Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services Department.

History of the Illinois Envelope Building

Early Days of the Company

The Illinois Envelope Company started in 1902. It was first located in Centralia, Illinois. In 1904, the company moved to Kalamazoo. This move happened because the Bryant Paper Company asked them to. Bryant Paper Company was a big business partner.

Building the Factory

The company built this factory in Kalamazoo in 1904. More parts were added to the building in 1941. The Illinois Envelope Company used this building for many years. They stayed there until 1998.

New Owners and New Purpose

In 1998, a company called Mail-Well bought the Illinois Envelope Company. The factory closed five months later. The building was empty for a long time. In 2016, the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners decided to fix it up. They wanted to use it for health and human services. The department moved into the building in 2018.

What the Building Looks Like

The Illinois Envelope Co. Building is a very large building. It has three stories and is shaped like a rectangle. It was built like an old factory. The building is made of red-tan brick. It has a flat roof with special skylights. These skylights look like saw teeth.

Building Design and Features

The building was made to hold the factory, a warehouse, and offices. The main entrance is through an archway. This archway is in the corner of the building. The windows are tall and narrow. They have a classic four-over-four design. Some brick additions are connected to the building. These additions are one or two stories tall.
