Description: The concrete abutments and green-painted gearing system is all that remains of a hand-cranked pony-truss swing bridge that carried Green Lane over the Holland River Division (Newmarket Canal). It was widely referred to as the Kelly Bridge, due to the Kelly family that owned farmland immediately south of the bridge. Used for almost a century from 1911, Green Lane was realigned a few meters south (just behind the photographer) as part of a four-lane widening plan that opened in February 2002. The original bridge was mechanically unsound and removed in 2004, the bridge seen here is a new structure recently installed as part of a recreational trail following the old canal. The image was taken in October after a stretch of good weather, and the rather high water level suggests complains about there being too little water flow may have been overblown.
