When the Dodos were all dead, and the forest near theharbours had been cut down, the Dutch neglected andabandoned this beautiful island—it is difficult to under-stand why—and in 1714 it was occupied by the FrenchEast India Company, and became soon afterwards aflourishing French colony (Llle-de-France).
