Imani School facts for kids
The Imani School is a Christian private school for elementary and middle school students. It is located in Houston, Texas, in a large complex called the Power Center. The school is especially for African-American children. It is part of the Windsor Village United Methodist Church.
The Imani School's Journey
The Imani School started in 1988. It first opened in the church building during the fall of that year. When the school began, it had 25 students. The name "Imani" comes from the Swahili word for "faith" or "to believe."
In 1993, the school moved to the Power Center. This center was a large area with two empty buildings. The church planned for the Power Center to also have a bank, a medical clinic, and other businesses. By 1994, The Imani School had grown to 236 students. It taught children from kindergarten through 5th grade. The Power Center was fully finished in 1995. In 1996, the school had 250 students.
Patricia Hogan Williams, who was the director of the school in 1998, explained why the school was important. She said that many black students in public schools were not getting the support they needed. The Imani School wanted to help meet the needs of black students. The principal also shared that about 90% of students who graduated from Imani School went on to special programs for gifted students in high school.
