Imola was a small, undeveloped area in Napa County, California. It was not an official town or city. This place was located only 7 feet (2 meters) above sea level.
What Was Imola?
Imola was situated along the Southern Pacific Railroad. It was about 1.25 miles (2 kilometers) south of Napa. A post office opened in Imola in 1920. It served the community for many years before closing in 1953.
The Napa State Hospital
Imola was best known as the home of the Napa State Hospital. This hospital helped people with mental health challenges. Imola was named after a town called Imola in Italy. That Italian town also had a similar hospital.
In 1948, the Napa State Hospital was seen as a "house of hope." Patients there could learn new skills. They worked in farming and other activities supported by the hospital. Later, Imola became a part of the city of Napa.
