Nationality Indian
Occupation Geneticist

Imran Siddiqi (born 7 September 1957) is an amazing Indian scientist. He is a geneticist, which means he studies genes and how living things inherit traits. Right now, he leads a research team at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in India.

Learning and Degrees

Early Studies

Imran Siddiqi finished his Master of Science degree in chemistry in 1981. He studied at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.

Advanced Research

After his master's, he continued his studies. He worked with Professor Franklin Stahl. His research focused on how genes mix and match in tiny viruses called bacteriophages. This work was part of his PhD.

He earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1989. This degree came from the University of Oregon in the United States. Later, he did more advanced research, called post-doctoral work. He did this at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, India.

Career and Discoveries

Focus on Plant Genetics

Dr. Siddiqi mainly studies genetics and how plants grow. He also looks at how genes combine in new ways. His work has made big steps in understanding plant meiosis. This is a special cell division that creates reproductive cells. He also studies gametogenesis, which is how plants make their reproductive cells.

Understanding Apomixis

A key part of his research is on something called apomixis. This is a way plants can make seeds without needing two parents. It's like a plant making a perfect copy of itself through its seeds.

Why Apomixis is Important

Sometimes, farmers grow special hybrid plants. These plants have great traits, like growing a lot of food. But when these hybrid plants make seeds, the new plants often lose those good traits. This makes it hard to grow more of the best plants.

Dr. Siddiqi's research aims to solve this problem. If scientists can make plants use apomixis, they could create exact copies of these amazing hybrid plants. This would help farmers grow more food and improve agriculture around the world.

Leading a Research Group

Since 1992, Dr. Siddiqi has been a scientist at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB). This center is in Hyderabad. He also started and leads a special research group there. This group focuses on plant genetics.

Sharing Knowledge

Dr. Siddiqi also helps share scientific knowledge. He is on the editorial boards of several science journals. These include the Journal of Biosciences and the Journal of Genetics. He also works with BMC Plant Biology and the Journal of Integrative Plant Biology.

Awards and Recognition

Dr. Siddiqi has received many honors for his important work.

  • In 2008, he became a fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences.
  • In 2011, he won the Infosys Prize in Life Sciences. This award was given by the Infosys Science Foundation. He received it for his big contributions to improving agriculture.
  • In the same year, he was also chosen as a fellow of the Indian National Science Academy.
