Alice's Senior Year Adventures
The story begins with Alice and her friends starting their final semester of senior year. Alice feels like she hasn't joined any clubs or sports. She thinks it's too late to try new things. But she also wants to make her last year special.
Planning for the Future
Alice's friends, including Gwen, think the year will be fun anyway. They have each other, after all! Gwen suggests they all work on a cruise ship during the summer. It would be a great way to earn money and have an adventure together. At first, Alice isn't sure about the idea. But soon, all the girls decide to apply for jobs on the ship. They hope to work together after they graduate.
A New Challenge: Poetry
Alice's AP English teacher, Mrs. Rosen, asks her to stay after class. Mrs. Rosen talks to Alice about writing poetry. She wants Alice to write a poem for the Ivy Day Ceremony. Alice knows a lot about the ceremony. However, she feels she isn't good at writing poems. She is unsure if she can do it.
Trying Out for the Play
Alice has worked behind the scenes on stage crew for three years. Now, she decides to try out for the senior play. She calls her friend Pamela and says she's going to audition for the part of Anne. Alice is very nervous during the tryouts. She doubts she will get the role.
The day the cast list is posted, everyone congratulates Alice. She is confused at first. Then she sees a crowd around the list of names. Her friends are there, cheering with joy. Alice pushes through the crowd. She sees her name: Anne: Alice McKinley. She got the part!
Opening Night Nerves
The next few weeks are very busy for Alice. Rehearsals for the play take up a lot of her time. She doesn't get much sleep. Finally, the day of the play arrives. Alice is scared but also excited to perform. As she walks onto the stage, she feels very nervous. She has "butterflies" in her stomach.
After an hour, the first performance is over. Alice realizes it wasn't so bad after all! She feels proud of herself.
After the Play
After the play, Alice and the cast go bowling. Ryan drives Alice and some friends home. Alice is the last one to be dropped off. She and Ryan share a moment before she leaves the car. Alice walks into her house, wondering about what just happened. She isn't sure what to tell Patrick, her boyfriend. She doesn't know how he would react.
Later in the book, Alice, Liz, Gwen, and Pamela spend a day at the mall. They are going to a baby shower.
Graduation Day
The group of friends finally graduates from high school. It's a big moment for them all. Patrick is Alice's date for the prom.
