Indé is a municipality located in the Mexican state of Durango. Think of a municipality as a local government area, similar to a county or a district in other countries. The main town, or "municipal seat," is also called Indé. This area covers about 2,370.9 square kilometers (about 915 square miles).
Population and Communities
In 2010, about 5,280 people lived in the municipality of Indé. This was a bit more than in 2005, when the population was 4,824 people.
The municipality of Indé has 83 smaller towns or villages, which are called "localities." None of these individual towns had more than 1,000 people living in them in 2010. This means Indé is mostly made up of smaller communities rather than one large city.
A Glimpse into History
Indé is part of a historic route known as the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. This name means "Royal Inland Road." It was a very important trade route during the time of New Spain, connecting Mexico City all the way to Santa Fe in what is now the United States.
This road was used to transport valuable goods like silver from mines, as well as other products and ideas. Being located along this route suggests that Indé might have played a role in this historical network.
