Indian Cabins: Alberta's Northern Tip

Indian Cabins is about 150 kilometers (93 miles) north of a town called High Level. It's also only 15 kilometers (9 miles) south of the border with the Northwest Territories. This means it's the very last community you'll find in Alberta if you're driving north!

Because it's so far north, Indian Cabins is often called the "northernmost community" in Alberta. In 2023, people living there had to leave their homes for a short time. This was because a wildfire was burning close by, and everyone needed to stay safe.

A Key Stop for Fuel

For many years, Indian Cabins was a very important stop for drivers. It had the Indian Cabins Trading Post, which sold gas. Many people traveling on Highway 35 would stop here to fill up their tanks.

In early 2019, the gas station had to close for a while. This created a huge gap of about 335 kilometers (208 miles) without any gas stations on the Mackenzie Highway. Imagine driving that far without being able to get gas!

Luckily, a new fuel system was set up in winter 2020. This brought gas sales back to the Indian Cabins Trading Post. Besides the gas station and a small convenience store, there are also a few trailers where people live in the community.
