Indian City is a Canadian music group that plays a mix of folk and rock music. They are well-known for their album Here & Now, which was nominated for a Juno Award in 2017. The group was started in 2012 by Vince Fontaine, who was also in the band Eagle & Hawk. Indian City often has different musicians playing together, like a big musical family. They are sometimes called an "Indigenous version of Broken Social Scene" because many talented artists join in. Many famous musicians have played with Indian City, including Don Amero, William Prince, Jim Cuddy, and Chantal Kreviazuk.

The Start of Indian City

Indian City began in 2012. Their first album, Supernation, came out in August of that year. They celebrated its release with a concert in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Supernation won the award for Best Pop Album at the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards. Don Amero, one of the musicians, also won Male Entertainer of the Year for his work with Indian City.

More Albums and Awards

After their first album, Indian City released their second album, Colors, in 2013. In 2015, they shared a new song called One Day.

Their third album, Here & Now, was released on February 15, 2017. A song from this album, "Through the Flood", won an award for Best Music Video Performance from the Native American Music Awards. Three other songs from Here & Now also won awards at the Indian Summer Music Awards in 2017. "Tree of Life" won Best Country, "Seasons" won Best Pop, and "Here & Now" won Best Rock.

The album Here & Now was also nominated for the Indigenous Music Album of the Year at the Juno Awards. The song "Through the Flood" from this album, which features Don Amero, talks about important social issues in Canada. In 2018, the band played at a concert to help people learn more about these issues.

Continuing the Music

Indian City's fourth album, Code Red, was released in the fall of 2021. This album included special guest artists like Jim Cuddy, Chantal Kreviazuk, and Don Amero.

Sadly, in January 2022, the band's leader, Vince Fontaine, passed away suddenly. The band decided to keep going with Code Red. The album was re-released by Warner Music Canada on September 30, 2022. This date is important as it is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. Code Red was nominated for Contemporary Indigenous Artist or Group of the Year at the Juno Awards in 2022.
