Indian Creek, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Indian Creek is a small, quiet place in northeastern Monroe County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. It's not a big city with its own government, but rather a community where people live.

This community is located right next to a stream also called Indian Creek. You can find it along U.S. Route 24, which is a main road. It's about halfway between two other towns: Monroe City to the northeast and Stoutsville to the southwest.

Indian Creek Community

Why is it called Swinkey?

Did you know that Indian Creek has another nickname? Some people call it "Swinkey"! This fun name comes from one of the very first people who settled in the area a long time ago. The name stuck, and people still use it today.

A Look at Its Past

Indian Creek has a bit of history, even though it's a small community. A post office was opened here way back in 1839. This was an important place for people to send and receive letters and packages. The post office stayed open for many years, finally closing its doors in 1906. Just like the creek it sits beside, the community took its name from the nearby Indian Creek.
