Indian English or South Asian English is a special way of speaking English. It's like a unique version of English. People mainly speak it in India. Also, many Indians who live in other countries use it.

This way of speaking English grew during and after the time when Britain ruled India. This period was called the British Raj. English is an important language in India. About 90 million people speak it. But only a small number, less than 250,000, speak it as their first language.

How English Came to India

In the 1800s, Britain needed to teach English in India. This was important for their rule. Many schools in India taught English. Most of these schools were run by missionaries. They often taught European and Eurasian children. They also helped orphans. The students from these schools became the first English teachers in India.
