The Indonesian one hundred thousand rupiah banknote (Rp100,000) is the highest value money note in Indonesia. It's like the biggest bill you can get! It was first made on November 1, 1999.
At first, these notes were made of a type of plastic called polymer. But since 2004, they have been printed on cotton paper.

The First Rp100,000 Note (1999)
To get ready for the year 2000 (often called Y2K), when people thought computers might have problems, Bank Indonesia printed many of these notes. They ordered 500 million plastic notes from Australia.
This note was about 153 by 65 millimeters. On the front, it showed Indonesia's first President, Sukarno, and Vice President, Hatta. It also had the text of the Proclamation of Indonesian independence. On the back, you could see the Parliament Building in Jakarta.
Security Features of the 1999 Note
The 1999 note had special features to prevent fake money. It had a watermark of the national emblem, Garuda Pancasila. There was also a hologram of the Bank of Indonesia's logo. You could see through a clear window on the note. The printing was raised, so you could feel it. Also, an image of "100000" in a rectangle would glow under ultraviolet (UV) light. This note was no longer valid after December 31, 2008.
It was one of only two plastic Indonesian banknotes ever made. The other was the Rp50,000 note from 1993.
The 2004 Design Update
On December 29, 2004, Bank Indonesia released a new version of the Rp100,000 note. This time, it was printed on imported paper, not plastic. The main color of the note changed to red.
New Security Features in 2004
This new note had even more advanced security features. The serial number was asymmetrical, meaning it wasn't perfectly balanced. It had a thicker security thread, which is a line running through the paper. There was a see-through image that you could see when holding it up to the light. It also used special ink that changed color when you tilted the note. There was also raised printing on the bottom right side to help people who are blind.
The pictures on the front and back were mostly the same. But the front now also showed Sukarno's house. The watermark changed to show Wage Rudolf Supratman, a famous Indonesian composer.
The 2011 Minor Changes
In 2011, the Rp100,000 note got a small update. It added "rainbow printing," which makes colors appear to shift. It also included Omron rings, which are small circles that help prevent copying. Two new raised circles were added on the lower left side for blind people. The Parliament building on the note also got new lettering. These notes were first released on October 31, 2011.
The 2014 Commemorative Update
To celebrate Indonesia's 69th Independence Day on August 17, 2014, Bank Indonesia updated the Rp100,000 note again. The phrase "BANK INDONESIA" was changed to "NEGARA KESATUAN REPUBLIK INDONESIA" (which means "Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia").
Other changes included a different see-through image and updated titles for President Sukarno and Vice President Hatta. Some color blocks were added, and the serial number on the lower left of the back of the note changed to red. The "BANK INDONESIA" lettering on the upper right of the back became smaller.
The 2016 Major Redesign
On December 19, 2016, the Rp100,000 note had a big redesign. The front now featured an updated picture of the President and Vice President. The back showed beautiful images of a Topeng Betawi dance, the Raja Ampat Islands, and a moon orchid.
Security Features of the 2016 Note
This note included a watermark of Wage Rudolf Supratman. It also had microprinting (tiny words that are hard to see), raised printing, and a see-through image of the Bank of Indonesia's logo. There was a latent image (an image that appears when you tilt the note). Special inks that change color and glow under UV light were also used. Bank Indonesia expects these notes to be taken out of circulation by 2026.
The Latest 2022 Design
The most recent update to this note happened on August 17, 2022. This was to celebrate Indonesia's 77th independence anniversary. The design and security features are mostly the same as the 2016 series.
The main differences are the watermark, which now shows both President Sukarno and Vice President Hatta. The colors on the note are also more varied and bright, instead of being just one main color. This note also uses magnetic ink that creates a dynamic image movement.
