Inez Clough's Performing Career

Inez Clough spent her younger years in Massachusetts. She went to school in Worcester and learned to play the piano and sing in Boston. In 1896, Inez joined a Broadway show called Oriental America. This show was created by John William Isham, who was a Vaudeville producer.

Touring Europe

In 1897, Inez Clough traveled to London for the show's tour in Europe. Her acting group found that theaters in Europe often had better facilities than those in America. They also felt very welcome. This was a big difference from the way many African Americans were treated in the United States at that time.

After touring with Oriental America, Inez stayed in London for about ten years. During this time, she taught voice lessons and performed solo shows. She also joined a group called The Drury Lane Pantomimes.

Return to the United States

In the early 1900s, Inez Clough came back to the United States. She kept acting, mostly in musical comedy shows that featured only Black performers. She was in a show called The Shoo-Fly Regiment in 1907. This show was created by Bob Cole and J. Rosamond Johnson. Inez also toured with the famous Williams and Walker company.

Acting on Stage and Screen

In 1917, Inez acted in a play called Three Plays For a Negro Theatre. Ridgely Torrence wrote this play, which was performed at the Garden Theatre in New York City.

Writers at the time said this play was important. It tried to show honest Black characters dealing with real-life problems. It was different from the funny, often exaggerated, shows like minstrelsy that were common then. Many people noticed and praised Inez Clough's part in this play.

Inez Clough also acted in many silent films in the early 1920s. Some of these movies include Easy Money, Ties of Blood, and Secret Sorrow.

Inez Clough married Henry Peter Hogan in New York City. She lived there for most of the rest of her life. Towards the end of her life, Inez faced some health challenges. She passed away on November 21, 1933, at the age of 60.
