Inez E. Dickens (born July 15, 1949) is an American politician. She worked to represent people in New York City and New York State. She was a member of the New York State Assembly from 2017 to 2024. In this role, she represented the 70th district in Manhattan. Before that, she was a member of the New York City Council from 2006 to 2016. There, she represented the 9th district.

Early Life and Family
Inez Dickens has lived in New York City her whole life. Her family has a history in politics. Her father, Lloyd E. Dickens, was a Democratic District Leader. He also served in the New York Assembly. Her uncle, Thomas K. Dickens, was an assemblyman and a judge.
Education and Early Career
Inez Dickens went to P.S. 133 and Julia Richman High School. She studied real estate and land economics at New York University and Howard University. She also continued her education in Chicago. In 1974, she was first elected as a State Party Committeewoman. She held this position for 32 years. A State Party Committeewoman helps guide a political party's activities in a specific area.
Serving on the City Council
In 2005, Inez Dickens ran for the City Council. She won the election and became the council member for the 9th New York City Council District in 2006. This district includes areas like Central Harlem and Morningside Heights.
As a new council member, she was given important leadership roles. She became the majority whip and chaired the Committee on Standards and Ethics. She was also the first African-American woman to be appointed as deputy majority leader. She also chaired the Subcommittee on Planning, Dispositions and Concessions. These roles meant she helped lead the council and make decisions about city plans. She was re-elected to the City Council in 2009 and 2013.

Moving to the Assembly
In 2016, Assemblyman Keith L. T. Wright decided to retire from the Assembly. This opened up a seat in the New York State Assembly. Inez Dickens, who was finishing her time on the City Council, decided to run for this open seat. She ran without any opponents in the primary election. In the general election, she won by a large margin against her opponent.
Serving the State
Inez Dickens officially started her first term in the New York State Assembly on January 1, 2017. She represented the 70th district. In 2023, she was appointed to a leadership role as Deputy Majority Whip. This means she helped organize and encourage other members of her political party in the Assembly. She retired from the New York State Assembly at the end of her term on December 31, 2024.
