Inez E. Dickens (born July 15, 1949) is an important leader in New York State. She is an Assemblymember for the 70th district in the New York State Assembly. This means she helps make laws for New York State. She is a member of the Democratic Party. Her district includes parts of Harlem and other neighborhoods in Manhattan. Before joining the State Assembly, she served on the New York City Council from 2006 to 2016.

About Inez Dickens
Early Life and Family Background
Inez Dickens has lived in New York City her whole life. Her family has a history of public service. Her father, Lloyd E. Dickens, was a Democratic District Leader and also served in the New York Assembly. Her uncle, Thomas K. Dickens, was an assemblyman and later a judge.
Education and Early Career
Inez Dickens went to P.S. 133 and Julia Richman High School. She studied real estate and land economics at New York University and Howard University. In 1974, she was first elected as a State Party Committeewoman. She held this position for 32 years, helping her political party.
Serving the City Council
In 2004, Inez Dickens was one of New York's 33 presidential electors. These electors cast votes for the president. In 2005, she ran for the City Council to replace Bill Perkins. She won this election and was re-elected in 2009 and 2013.
From 2006 to 2016, Inez Dickens was the councilmember for the 9th New York City Council District. This district covers areas like Central Harlem and Morningside Heights. As a new council member, she was appointed as the majority whip. She also chaired the Committee on Standards and Ethics. She was the first African-American woman to be Deputy Majority Leader. She also chaired the Subcommittee on Planning, Dispositions and Concessions.

Joining the State Assembly
In 2016, Assemblyman Keith L. T. Wright decided to retire from the Assembly. This opened up a seat in the New York State Assembly. Inez Dickens, who was finishing her time on the City Council, decided to run for this open seat.
She ran without any opponents in the primary election. In the general election, she won by a large margin against her opponent. Inez Dickens officially became an Assemblymember on January 1, 2017. The person who took her place on the City Council was State Senator Bill Perkins.
Leadership and Achievements
In 2023, Inez Dickens was appointed to a leadership role in the New York State Assembly. She became the Deputy Majority Whip. With her many years of experience, she has helped with important projects. One major project is a new complex on 125th Street. This complex will include a civil rights museum and 170 affordable homes.
Inez Dickens is planning to retire from the New York State Assembly. Her term will end on December 31, 2024.
