Sir Robert Harry Inglis Palgrave FRS FSS (born June 11, 1827 – died January 25, 1919) was an important British economist. An economist is someone who studies how money, goods, and services are made, shared, and used. He was also a well-known editor and writer.

Early Life and Education

Robert Harry Inglis Palgrave was born on June 11, 1827. His father was Francis Palgrave, and his mother was Elizabeth Turner. Elizabeth's father, Dawson Turner, was a banker. Robert had three brothers: Francis Turner Palgrave, William Gifford Palgrave, and Sir Reginald Palgrave.

Robert went to school at Charterhouse School. This was a famous school in England.

His Career

Robert Palgrave started working at a young age. In 1843, when he was just 16, he joined a bank called Deacon, Williams and Co. A few years later, in 1845, he moved to another bank in Yarmouth. This bank, Dawson Turner Turner and Gurney, was owned by his grandfather. He also became a director at another bank, Barclay and Co. For a time, he worked as a clerk for the House of Commons, which is part of the British Parliament.

In 1877, Robert became the financial editor for The Economist magazine. This meant he was in charge of the money-related news. Later that same year, he became the main editor of the magazine. He held this important job until 1883.

One of his biggest achievements was creating a three-volume book series called Palgrave's Dictionary of Political Economy. This huge work was published between 1894 and 1899. He also helped edit the historical writings of his father, Sir Francis Palgrave. Robert also edited The Banking Almanac until he died. For a while, he was also the editor of The Bankers' Magazine.

In June 1882, he was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very special honor given to top scientists and scholars in the United Kingdom. In 1909, he was made a knight, which means he received the title "Sir." This happened after he finished his famous dictionary.
