Ingrid Lilian Thulin (born January 27, 1926 – died January 7, 2004) was a famous Swedish actress. She starred in many movies, especially those directed by Ingmar Bergman.
About Ingrid Thulin
Ingrid Thulin was born in Sollefteå, a town in northern Sweden. Her father, Adam Thulin, was a fisherman. As a young girl, Ingrid loved to dance and took ballet lessons.
She was accepted into the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm in 1948. This is a very famous acting school in Sweden. She was married to Harry Schein, who started the Swedish Film Institute. They were married for over 30 years.
Ingrid lived in different countries during her life. She bought an apartment in Paris, France, in the 1960s. Later, she moved to Italy and lived there for 34 years.
She returned to Sweden for medical care. Ingrid Thulin passed away from cancer in Stockholm in 2004. She was almost 78 years old. She also wrote a book about her life in 1992.
Her Acting Career
Ingrid Thulin worked a lot with the famous Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. She appeared in many of his well-known films. These include Wild Strawberries (1957) and The Magician (1958). In The Magician, she even dressed up as a boy for much of the movie!
Other important films she made with Bergman were Winter Light (1962), The Silence (1963), and Cries and Whispers (1972).
Ingrid Thulin won several awards for her acting. She shared the Best Actress award at the 1958 Cannes Film Festival. She also won a Guldbagge Award for Best Actress in 1964. This was the very first year this award was given out in Sweden!
She also won the David di Donatello Awards in 1974. She was nominated for a BAFTA Award in the same year. In 1980, she was chosen to lead the jury at the 30th Berlin International Film Festival. This shows how respected she was in the film world.
