Innawonga is a small Aboriginal community located in Western Australia. It is about 40 kilometers (25 miles) southeast of a town called Tom Price. This community is part of the Pilbara region, which is a large area in the northern part of the state. It also falls within the Shire of Ashburton, which is a local government area.
Understanding Native Title
Native title is a special legal right that recognizes the traditional ownership of land by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. These rights come from their long-standing laws and customs. It means that their connection to the land is officially recognized.
The Innawonga community is located within an area known as the Yinhawangka Part A native title claim. This means that the Yinhawangka people have recognized native title rights over this specific land.
How the Community is Governed
Every community needs a way to make decisions and manage its daily life. This is called governance. The Innawonga community is managed by its own organization, called the Innawonga Aboriginal Corporation.
This corporation was officially set up on February 6, 1990. It operates under a special law called the Aboriginal Councils and Associations Act 1976. This law helps Aboriginal communities form their own groups to manage their affairs.
Community Planning
Communities often have plans for how their land and buildings will be used and developed. This is known as town planning. For Innawonga, there is a document called "Innwonga Draft Layout Plan No.1".
This plan is currently a draft, which means it is not yet final. The community still needs to approve it before it can be put into action.
