Inomjon Buzrukovich Usmonxoʻjayev (in Cyrillic Uzbek: Иномжон Бузрукович Усмонхўжаев ; in Russian: Инамджан Бузрукович Усманходжаев Inamdzhan Buzrukovich Usmankhodzhayev; 21 May 1930 – 17 March 2017) was an important political leader in the Soviet Union. He served as the eleventh First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Uzbek SSR. This was a very high position, similar to being the main leader of the Uzbek region at that time. Usmonxoʻjayev took on this role during a challenging period, known as the "Cotton Scandal."
Usmonxoʻjayev's Time as Leader
Inomjon Usmonxoʻjayev became the First Secretary on November 3, 1983. During his time as leader, there were problems with reports about cotton production in Uzbekistan. Satellite images showed that the official reports from the Uzbek government were not accurate.
Usmonxoʻjayev stayed in his position throughout this difficult time. He was seen as following directions from the central government in Moscow. This was because the main Communist Party leaders wanted to have more control over Uzbekistan.
He served as First Secretary until January 12, 1988. After this, Rafiq Nishonov took over his role.
On January 12, 1988, Usmonxoʻjayev was removed from his duties as the First Secretary. This was officially stated as being "in connection with his retirement." Later, on May 24, 1988, he was also removed from a group called the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. On November 28, 1988, he was removed from the Central Committee of the CPSU because of issues that arose during his time in office.
Inomjon Usmonxoʻjayev passed away on March 17, 2017, when he was 86 years old.
