Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers facts for kids
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is a big group of experts in electronics, electrical engineering, and other related fields. Think of it like a club for people who design and build things like computers, phones, and power grids!
IEEE has offices in New York City and Piscataway, New Jersey, in the United States. It was created in 1963 when two older groups, the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and the Institute of Radio Engineers, decided to join forces.

A Brief History of IEEE
The story of IEEE goes back to 1884 with a group called the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE). Later, in 1912, another group, the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE), was formed.
Even though AIEE was bigger at first, IRE grew quickly and had more members by the mid-1950s. To make a stronger, unified group, AIEE and IRE decided to merge in 1963. This is how the IEEE we know today was born!
While IEEE's main office is in New York City, most of its daily work happens at its operations center in Piscataway, New Jersey. This center opened in 1975.
As of 2021, IEEE has over 400,000 members. These members live in more than 160 countries around the world. This means most members are now from outside the U.S.
What Are IEEE's Technical Societies?
IEEE has 39 special groups called "technical societies." Each society focuses on a specific area of engineering or technology.
These societies help their members by:
- Publishing special magazines and books.
- Organizing conferences where people can share new ideas.
- Helping members connect with each other for jobs and projects.
Here are some of the areas these societies cover:
- Aerospace and Electronic Systems
- Antennas & Propagation
- Broadcast Technology
- Circuits and Systems
- Communications
- Electronics Packaging
- Computational Intelligence
- Computer
- Consumer Technology
- Control Systems
- Dielectrics & Electrical Insulation
- Education
- Electromagnetic Compatibility

- Vehicular Technology
Other Important Parts of IEEE
IEEE Global History Network
In 2008, the IEEE started the IEEE Global History Network. This project now directs to the Engineering and Technology History Wiki. It's a great place to learn about the history of engineering and technology!
IEEE Foundation
The IEEE Foundation is a special charity group started in 1973. Its main goal is to support and encourage learning, new ideas, and excellence in technology.
Even though it's a separate group, it works very closely with IEEE. The foundation helps by:
- Accepting donations to support different programs.
- Funding educational projects.
- Helping to preserve historical information about technology.
- Recognizing people who have done amazing things in engineering.
By the end of 2014, the foundation had nearly $45 million to help support these important goals.
