The Institution of Structural Engineers is a special group for structural engineers in Britain. It's like a club for experts who design and build strong structures. These structures include bridges, buildings, and towers.
In 2021, nearly 30,000 members belonged to this group. They worked in 112 different countries around the world. The Institution helps engineers get special recognition for their skills. It also publishes a magazine called The Structural Engineer every month. This magazine has been coming out since 1924. They also have a research journal called Structures.

History of the Institution
The Institution of Structural Engineers started a long time ago. It began on July 21, 1908, at the Ritz Hotel in London. Back then, it was called the Concrete Institute. People needed clear rules for using concrete in building. This was important to make sure buildings were safe and strong.
H. Kempton Dyson was one of the people who helped start it. He also became the first permanent secretary. In 1909, the group officially became a company. This meant it had legal standing.
The name changed to the Institution of Structural Engineers in 1922. This happened because their work grew to include all kinds of structures. By 1925, the Institution had 1,700 members. It has continued to grow much bigger since then. Today, it has about fifty groups located all over the world.
The Institution received a special honor in March 1934. It was given a Royal Charter. This is a formal document from the King or Queen. It shows that the Institution is important and recognized.
Women in Structural Engineering
For a long time, engineering was mostly a field for men. But women have made important contributions. The first woman to become an Associate member was Florence Mary Taylor in 1926.
Later, in 1947, Mary Irvine became the first woman to be a Chartered Member. This means she was a fully qualified and recognized structural engineer. Then, in 1954, Marjem Chatterton was the first woman to become a Fellow. This is a very high honor in the Institution.
What Structural Engineers Do
Structural engineers are like the superheroes of building. They make sure that buildings, bridges, and other structures are safe. They use science and math to design things that can stand up to wind, earthquakes, and heavy loads.
They work on many different projects. This can include designing tall skyscrapers or long bridges. They also help make sure old buildings are still safe to use. Their work is very important for our everyday lives.
