International Bridge Walk facts for kids
The International Bridge Walk is a special yearly event. It happens on the last Saturday in June. During this event, people can walk across the International Bridge. This bridge connects Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan in the United States with Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario in Canada.
The walk started in 1987. It shows the strong friendship between these two cities, often called "the two Saults." It also celebrates the good relationship between the United States and Canada. The event takes place around Canada Day, which is Canada's national holiday.
What is the International Bridge Walk?
The International Bridge Walk is a unique chance to walk across a border. It's a fun way for people from both countries to come together. The event highlights peace and cooperation between neighbors.
How the Walk Works
The walk usually begins in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Participants gather at the Norris Building parking lot at Lake Superior State University. Before the walk starts, officials from both cities give speeches. Everyone sings "O Canada" and "The Star Spangled Banner."
The walk typically starts around 9:00 a.m. Walkers head west on Easterday Avenue. They then go onto the bridge near the toll plaza. The journey ends at the OLG Casino west parking lot in Canada.
Important Details for Participants
After reaching Canada, buses are available. These buses help U.S. citizens return to the United States. The walk usually finishes by 10:30 a.m. No one is allowed to walk on the bridge after this time.
In 2012, something new was added to the event. A bicycle parade now crosses the bridge before the walk. Cyclists cross from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The walk then takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
