International Museum of Women facts for kids
The International Museum of Women (IMOW) was an online museum based in San Francisco, California, USA. It focused on important topics and issues affecting women all over the world. Since March 2014, it has been part of the Global Fund for Women.
How IMOW Started and Grew
The museum first began in 1985 as the Women's Heritage Museum. Back then, it created special shows, public events, and learning materials for Women's History Month. It also celebrated local women who did amazing things.
In 1997, a group of teachers from the Bay Area helped push for a bigger museum. They worked hard to collect donations.
After expanding and changing its name to IMOW in 1997, the museum continued to grow. It organized online exhibits, held public discussions, and created learning plans for schools. It also hosted many speaker series.
As of June 2009, IMOW was a completely online museum. There was an idea in 2005 to build a large physical building, but it didn't happen.
Online Exhibitions
IMOW featured several interesting exhibits that visitors could explore online.
One exhibit was called Imagining Ourselves. It showed artwork and writing from women aged 20 to 40 from different parts of the world. It explored how they saw their own generations. This exhibit was also turned into a book in 2006.
Another exhibit, created in 2010, was named Economica: Women and the Global Economy. This exhibit looked at how women around the world use money and their important roles in the economy.
Joining Forces
On March 5, 2014, IMOW joined with the Global Fund for Women. Now, IMOW is officially part of the Global Fund for Women, continuing its work to support women's issues worldwide.
