The International Quilt Museum is a special place in Lincoln, Nebraska. It is part of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. This museum opened in 2008. It holds the biggest public collection of quilts anywhere in the world. A quilt is a type of blanket or wall hanging made by sewing together layers of fabric.

History of the Quilt Museum

The International Quilt Museum started in 1997. It began when Ardis and Robert James, who were from Nebraska, gave their collection of almost 950 quilts to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This amazing gift became the main part of what is now the largest public quilt collection on Earth.

How the Museum Grew

The museum's building on 33rd Street opened in 2008. It was built with money from private donations. The James family gave a very important gift to help build it. The building is made of glass and brick. It was designed to be "green," meaning it is good for the environment.

Inside, the museum has special areas for the quilts. There are also spaces for research and storage. You can find educational displays there too. Custom-made galleries show different collections and special exhibits. These exhibits change often. Outside the entrance, there is a large outdoor sculpture called Reverie.

Recent Changes and Expansion

In 2015, the museum added more space. This expansion was also paid for by private donations. It doubled the room for storing quilts and showing them in galleries. In July 2019, the museum's name officially changed to the International Quilt Museum.

Amazing Quilt Collection

The museum's collection is huge and diverse. It includes old quilts from America and Europe. There are also modern quilts made by artists. Plus, it has quilts from many different countries around the world.

What You Can See

The collection has more than 9,000 quilts. These quilts come from over sixty countries. Some of them are very old, dating back to the 1600s. Experts and students study the history of quilts from all over the world here. The museum is always looking to add more international and modern quilts to its collection.

Exhibitions and Books

The museum often creates special exhibitions. They also publish books about some of these shows. Past exhibitions have included "Wild by Design" and "Quilts in Common." Other shows were "American Quilts in the Modern Age 1870 - 1940" and "Marseille: The Cradle of White Corded Quilting."
