Discovering Quilt History
The International Quilt Museum started in 1997. A couple from Nebraska, Ardis and Robert James, gave almost 950 of their beautiful quilts to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This amazing gift became the start of the world's largest public quilt collection.
The Quilt House Building
Thanks to donations, the museum moved into its new home in 2008. This building is called "Quilt House." It's a modern building made of glass and brick. Inside, there's a special place to keep the quilts safe and sound. There are also areas for learning and custom art galleries. These galleries show different quilts from the collection and special exhibits.
In 2015, the museum grew even bigger. It added more space for storing quilts and showing them off. In July 2019, the museum officially changed its name to the International Quilt Museum, or IQM for short.
The Amazing Quilt Collection
The museum's collection is truly global. It has more than 6,000 quilts from fifty different countries! Some quilts are very old, dating back to the 1600s. Others are modern art quilts made recently.
The collection includes quilts from America and Europe. It also features many international quilts. Experts at the museum study the history of quilts from all over the world. They also work to find and add new quilts to the collection. This helps them show all kinds of global quilting traditions.
The museum also publishes books about its exhibitions. These books share more about the quilts and their stories.
