Intervale Farm is a special old farm located at 1047 Intervale Road in New Gloucester, Maine, United States. It has a brick farmhouse that was built a long time ago, in the early 1800s. This house is one of the few "Federal style" brick homes in the countryside around New Gloucester.
The farm also has other buildings connected to the main house. This shows how farms used to be set up a long time ago. In 2004, a part of the farm (about 34 acres) was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical site! Today, Intervale Farm is still busy, growing vegetables and raising beef.
What is Intervale Farm Like?
Intervale Farm is found in the southern part of New Gloucester. It sits on the west side of Intervale Road, which is also known as Maine State Route 231. The farm used to be much larger, about 275 acres. Now, it is about 118 acres in total.
About 34 acres around the main farmhouse are actively used for farming. Farmers grow many different kinds of crops here.
The Main Farmhouse
The main house at Intervale Farm is a two-story building made of brick. It has a special kind of roof called a hip roof. Several wooden additions connect the house to a barn.
The front of the house faces east, towards the street. It looks very balanced, with five sections across. The main door is in the middle. It has small windows on either side and a decorative wooden fan shape above it. This fan shape is a common feature of the Federal style.
Inside, the house has a traditional layout with a hallway in the center. Some parts of the house have been changed over time. For example, bathrooms were added, and the old kitchen was turned into bedrooms. However, the house still has some of its original wooden decorations from the Federal period.
A Look Back at History
It's not completely clear who built the house at Intervale Farm. It might have been built by Jabez Cushman. He was an early owner of the land and was a very wealthy person. He was also active in local community events.
Experts believe the house was built around 1811. This date comes from a message found on one of the wooden beams in the attic. The house is quite large and fancy for its time. Most houses in the area back then were smaller, single-story homes called Capes. This suggests that a very important person built Intervale Farm.
The way the farm buildings are connected today was likely set up before 1870. We know this because there is an old photograph from that time showing the farm in a similar way.
