Inuvik, Northwest Territories facts for kids
Inuvik is a town located in the Northwest Territories of Canada. It serves as an important center for the Inuvik Region. This town is where the main offices for the local government are found.
History of Inuvik
Inuvik was built in 1953 to replace an older town called Aklavik. Aklavik often experienced floods, which made it a difficult place to live and work. So, a new, safer location was chosen.
How Inuvik Got Its Name
When it was first built, the new town was called "New Aklavik." However, this name caused confusion with the original Aklavik. So, in 1958, the town was renamed Inuvik. The name "Inuvik" comes from Inuvialuktun, which is the local Inuit language. In Inuvialuktun, Inuvik means "Place of Man."
