Inverailort House is a large, historic building located near Lochailort, in Scotland. It sits at the very end of Loch Ailort, a beautiful sea loch. This house has a long and interesting past, especially during World War II.

A Home with History

Inverailort House started as a hunting lodge for the MacDonald family of Clanranald. In 1828, Major General Sir Alexander Cameron made the house much bigger. Later, a man named James Head owned it. He was in charge of several shipping companies. He married into the Cameron family in 1890.

Francis Cameron-Head passed away in 1957. His wife lived at Inverailort until she died in 1994. Her friend, Barbara Mackintosh, continued to live there until 2015.

Early Photography at the House

In the late 1800s, Christian Cameron, who was James Head's wife, loved taking photos. She captured many pictures of the house and the beautiful area around it. Sadly, most of her old glass photo plates were lost or broken. This happened when the military took over the house during World War II. However, the photos that survived have been put into a book. Christian Cameron was very sad when many things inside the house were damaged by the army.

Inverailort During World War II

During the Second World War, Inverailort House became a secret training base. It was used by a special group called the Special Operations Executive (SOE). This group trained agents to gather information, perform sabotage, and survive in tough situations. The methods taught here were later used by the American CIA. The famous actor David Niven was one of the people who trained at Inverailort.

Secret Training Centre

The British War Office took over the house in May 1940. They used it as a Special Training Centre for soldiers who would fight in unusual ways. At first, it was run by a group called MI(R). Later, it became part of Combined Operations. Many new ways of fighting, like guerrilla warfare, were developed here. The training methods were also used for the famous Commando soldiers.

The SOE's main training was at nearby Arisaig House. The army left Inverailort House on August 20, 1942. Then, the Royal Navy took over the house. They renamed it HMS Lochailort. The Navy used it to train young sailors to become officers on small boats for Combined Operations. The Royal Navy moved out in January 1945.

Inverailort in Films

The village of Lochailort and buildings nearby have appeared in several movies. These include Local Hero, Breaking the Waves, and Complicity. Today, the main jobs in the area are tourism and raising salmon in the loch.

Currently, Inverailort House is in a state of ruin.
