Inwood, Indiana facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Inwood is a small place in Marshall County, Indiana, in the United States. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's part of the larger county area.

What is an Unincorporated Community?

Imagine a neighborhood that doesn't have its own mayor or town council. That's a bit like an unincorporated community. The people living there get their services, like roads and police, from the county government. It's different from a city or town, which has its own rules and leaders. Inwood is one of these special places in Indiana.

The Story of Inwood: A Look at Its Past

Inwood has an interesting history, especially how it got its name!

How Did Inwood Get Its Name?

Originally, this little settlement had a different name: Pearsonville. It was first planned out and mapped in 1854. This process is called being platted. It means someone drew up the plans for streets and lots.

Just two years later, something big happened that changed its name forever. A railroad line was built right through the area. The railroad company decided to give the settlement a new, shorter name: Inwood. They chose this name because the area was surrounded by lots of trees and forests. So, "Inwood" literally means "in the woods"!

Why Was the Railroad Important?

Railroads were super important in the 1800s. They helped people travel and moved goods from one place to another much faster. When a railroad came through a settlement like Pearsonville, it often helped the community grow. It made it easier for people to live and work there. The railroad bringing its new name, Inwood, shows just how much it influenced the area.
