Inês Etienne Romeu (born December 18, 1942 – died April 27, 2015) was a brave Brazilian woman. She was held as a political prisoner in the early 1970s. She was kept in a secret place known as the "House of Death." Inês Romeu is believed to be the only person who survived being held there.

In 2014, a military officer named Colonel Paulo Malhães shared important information. He told the National Truth Commission that Colonel Cyro Guedes Etchegoyen was in charge of the "House of Death." This place was used to question people who were thought to be against the government. Colonel Malhães said the goal was to make these people work as secret agents for the government.

Life as a Captive

Inês Romeu was chosen to work as a secret agent for the government. However, after she started, her handlers decided she was not truly helping them. She was then taken back and kept imprisoned. She stayed in prison for eight more years. Finally, she was released in 1979.

Later Years and Recognition

After her release, Inês Romeu wrote a book. It told the story of her time in captivity. This book helped many people understand what she went through.

In 2003, a man attacked Inês Romeu in her home. She suffered serious head injuries. Despite this, she continued to be honored for her courage. In 2009, the Brazilian President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, gave her a special award. It was called the "Right to Memory and Truth" award. This award recognized her bravery and her fight for justice.

Her Passing

Inês Romeu passed away in Niterói, Brazil, in April 2015. She was 72 years old. Her story remains an important part of Brazil's history.
