Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Iorwerth mab Owain Gwynedd (born around 1130, died 1174) was an important figure in Welsh history. He was also known as Iorwerth Drwyndwn, which means "the flat-nosed." Iorwerth was the oldest son of Owain Gwynedd, who was a powerful king of Gwynedd in Wales. His mother was Owain's first wife, Gwladys ferch Llywarch.

Iorwerth is perhaps best known as the father of Llywelyn the Great. Llywelyn became one of the most famous rulers in Welsh history. He managed to unite much of Wales under his rule.

Who Was Iorwerth Drwyndwn?

Iorwerth's nickname, "Drwyndwn," means "flat-nosed" or "broken-nosed." This nickname was very important for his life. In those times, a physical difference like this could affect a person's future.

His Family and Legacy

Iorwerth married a woman named Marared. She was the daughter of Madog ap Maredudd. Together, they had a son who would become very famous: Llywelyn. Llywelyn later became known as Llywelyn Fawr, or Llywelyn the Great. He is remembered as one of Wales's most important monarchs.

What He Inherited

From his father, King Owain Gwynedd, Iorwerth received a region called Nant Conwy. This was his inheritance. However, even though he was the oldest son, he did not become king after his father. This was unusual because the oldest son usually took the crown. The reason he did not become king was because of his nose. His nickname, "Trwyndwn," which meant "broken-nosed," was linked to this.
