IperEspresso is a special system that uses small capsules to make espresso coffee. It's like a mini coffee maker inside each capsule! This system was created by a company called Illy.
The IperEspresso capsule has a clever design that makes coffee in two steps. First, hot water under pressure mixes with the coffee. This step is called iper-infusion. It helps to get all the yummy flavor and smell from the coffee. Second, this coffee liquid is pushed through a special part of the capsule. This mixes the coffee oils with air, creating a smooth, creamy foam on top of your espresso. This foam is called crema.
IperEspresso Machines
You need special machines to use IperEspresso capsules. These machines are made by companies like FrancisFrancis! (which is part of Illy), Gaggia, and Cuisinart. Some of the FrancisFrancis! machines are designed by famous artists and look really cool. For example, the X1 machine, designed by Luca Trazzi, was even listed by Forbes magazine as one of the best espresso machines in the world!
Illy also makes bigger FrancisFrancis! X2.1 IperEspresso machines. These are used in places like hotels and restaurants.
IperEspresso Capsules
Only Illy makes IperEspresso capsules. Each capsule holds about 7 grams of coffee. Illy uses 100% Arabica beans for their coffee. They buy these beans directly from farmers they have trained. Illy was the first coffee company to get a special award called the Responsible Supply Chain Process certification. This means they make sure their coffee is sourced in a fair and responsible way.
Illy offers different types of IperEspresso capsules:
- Normal roast: A balanced coffee flavor.
- Dark roast: A stronger, bolder coffee taste.
- Decaffeinated: Coffee without most of the caffeine.
- Lungo: These capsules are made for a longer espresso, meaning more water is used.
Illy also has a special line called Monoarabica. These capsules contain Arabica beans from just one country, like Brazil, Guatemala, Ethiopia, Colombia, Costa Rica, or India. This lets you taste the unique flavors from different parts of the world. Sometimes, they also offer a special coffee called Idillyum, which is low in caffeine and grown in El Salvador.
Recycling Your Capsules
IperEspresso capsules are made from recyclable plastic. However, you can't just put them in your regular recycling bin at home because they are hard to take apart and clean.
To recycle them in the USA, you can mail your used capsules back to Illy. Illy sells special prepaid bags for this. If you get coffee delivered regularly from Illy, you might even get these bags for free! You can also drop off your used capsules at any Sur La Table store in the USA.
