The Story of Gaggia
How Espresso Was Invented
Giovanni Achille Gaggia (born 1895, died 1961) was a clever inventor. He loved coffee. On September 5, 1938, he got a special paper called a patent. This patent was for a new kind of coffee machine. It was the first modern machine that didn't use steam.
Giovanni used this machine in his own coffee bar. His invention pushed hot water through coffee grounds with high pressure. This created a special foamy layer on top of the coffee. This foam is called 'crema'. It is a key part of what makes espresso unique.
Starting the Gaggia Company
The Gaggia company officially started in 1947. It became a formal business in 1948. At first, Gaggia made machines only for coffee shops. Soon after, they made their first machine for homes. It was called the Gilda.
The company became very popular when a famous coffee bar in Milan, Italy, installed a Gaggia machine. Giovanni's son, Camillo, helped grow the business.
Gaggia Machines for Everyone
For many years, Gaggia only made machines for professional use. But in 1977, they started making coffee machines for homes too. This meant more people could enjoy great espresso.
In 1989, the company was sold to a businessman named Gerhard Andlingler. Gaggia now offers different types of coffee machines. They make automatic espresso machines and manual ones. They also sell coffee beans and other accessories. Gaggia continues to create new and improved models.
Changes and New Owners
Around 2007, Gaggia faced some challenges. Sales went down, and there was a risk of moving production to other countries. Two years later, in 2009, a big Dutch company called Philips bought Gaggia's parent company, Saeco.
For a while, some Gaggia machines were made in Romania. However, the New Gaggia Classic machine is now made in Italy again. It uses an aluminum boiler. Before Philips took over, most Gaggia home espresso machines had aluminum boilers. Now, many use stainless steel boilers.
In 2017, Philips sold the professional part of Saeco, which included the Gaggia brand. An Italian company called N&W Global Vending SpA bought them. This company is known for making vending machines. In November 2017, N&W changed its name to Evoca Group. Evoca Group has helped the Gaggia brand grow again. They focus on making machines for coffee shops and restaurants.
