The Story of Faema
Early Machines
In the 1950s, Faema made espresso machines with horizontal boilers and levers. These were common designs at the time. People had to pull a lever to make the coffee.
The Revolutionary E61
In 1961, Faema launched a very special machine called the E61. This machine introduced many new ideas. These ideas are still used in most espresso machines today.
The biggest change was how the water was delivered. Instead of a lever, the E61 used a mechanical pump. This pump pushed water through the coffee at about 9 bar of pressure. This was a big improvement over older lever designs.
Faema also found a clever way to heat the water. Cold water went through the pump first. Then, it passed through a special tube inside the hot steam boiler. This quickly heated the water before it reached the coffee.
Smart Design for Better Coffee
The E61 also had a new part called a grouphead. This part holds the coffee. It was kept warm by hot water from the boiler flowing through it. This system is called a thermosyphon.
To make coffee, you moved a lever on the grouphead. Moving it a little bit let some water soak the coffee first. This helped the coffee taste smoother. When the lever was fully up, the pump started, and the coffee was made at full pressure.
E61's Big Impact
The new technology in the E61 was a huge step forward. It helped Faema become a leader in the espresso machine market very quickly. Today, Faema even sells a new version of the E61 for coffee shops.
The E61 also changed home espresso machines. Many home machines in Europe, North America, and Australia now use a similar design. This includes the E61-style grouphead and the heat exchange boiler. People like the look of the E61. More importantly, this design helps people make great espresso at home. The name E61 is a registered trademark.
Faema and Cycling
Faema has a long history of supporting cycling teams. They have been the main sponsor for many teams over the years. They also co-sponsored other teams.
One of the most famous cyclists to ride for a Faema-sponsored team was Eddy Merckx. He won the Tour de France five times!
