How Faema Grew
In the 1950s, Faema made espresso machines with horizontal boilers and lever systems. These were common at the time.
The Amazing E61 Machine
In 1961, Faema released a new machine called the E61. This machine brought many new ideas that are still used today.
- New Water System: The E61 used a mechanical pump. This pump pushed water through the coffee at about 9 bar (130.5 pounds per square inch) of pressure. Before, machines used levers for this.
- Smart Water Heating: The E61 solved the problem of heating water for the pump. It sent cold water through the pump first. Then, this water went through a special tube inside the hot steam boiler. This quickly heated the water before it reached the coffee.
- Warm Grouphead: Faema also added a new part called a grouphead. This part holds the coffee. The E61 kept the grouphead warm by circulating hot water from the boiler through it. This is called a thermosyphon circuit.
- Better Coffee Extraction: The grouphead had a lever. When you partly opened it, water from the city line would gently soak the coffee. This helped the coffee taste smoother. When the lever was fully up, the pump started, and the coffee was made with full pressure.
These new ideas in the E61 machine were a big deal. They helped Faema sell many espresso machines very quickly. Today, Faema even makes a new version of the E61 for businesses.
E61's Impact on Home Machines
The E61 also changed home espresso machines. Many home machines in Europe, North America, and Australia now use a similar grouphead and heat exchange system. People like the look of the E61 grouphead. But more importantly, it helped make much better espresso at home. The name E61 is a registered trademark.
Faema and Cycling
Faema has a long history of supporting cycling teams. They were often the main sponsor for many years. The most famous cyclist who rode for a Faema-sponsored team was Eddy Merckx. He won the Tour de France five times!
