Saeco is an Italian company famous for making espresso machines. You can find their machines all over the world, from simple manual ones to super-automatic ones that make coffee with the push of a button. The company is based in a town called Gaggio Montano, near Bologna, Italy.
The Story of Saeco
How It All Began
Saeco was started in 1981 by two founders, Sergio Zappella and Arthur Schmed. They had a big idea that changed how people make coffee at home.
In 1985, they introduced the Superautomatica. This was the very first fully automatic espresso machine designed for people to use in their own kitchens. It was a huge hit! Later, in 1999, Saeco bought another well-known espresso machine company, Gaggia.
New Ideas and Big Changes
Saeco has always been about creating new technology for coffee machines.
- In 1996, they introduced the cappuccinatore, a special tool that makes it easy to froth milk for cappuccinos.
- In 1999, they created the "SBS" system, which automatically adjusts the pressure to make the perfect brew.
- In 2013, they announced the GranBaristo Avanti, a coffee machine that you could control with Bluetooth!
In 2009, the famous Dutch electronics company Philips bought Saeco. You might know Philips for its Senseo coffee system. For a while, all of Saeco was part of Philips.
However, in 2017, the company was split.
- Saeco Professional: The part of the company that makes large machines for businesses like cafes and hotels was sold to an Italian company called N&W Global Vending, which is now known as Evoca Group. These machines are still made in the original factory in Gaggio Montano.
- Home Machines: Philips kept the part of Saeco that makes coffee machines for people to use at home.
So today, the Saeco brand is shared between two large companies, Evoca Group and Philips.
