The Story of Saeco
How Saeco Started
Saeco was created in 1981 by two people, Sergio Zappella and Arthur Schmed. They named their company "Sergio, Arthur e Compagnia" at first.
Making Coffee Easier
In 1985, Saeco made something new and exciting. They launched the very first fully automatic espresso machine for homes. This machine was called "Superautomatica." It made it much easier for people to enjoy espresso at home.
A few years later, in 1999, Saeco bought another well-known espresso brand called Gaggia. This helped Saeco grow even bigger in the coffee machine world.
Joining Philips
In May 2009, a big Dutch company called Philips wanted to buy Saeco. Philips already owned the Senseo coffee system. Saeco's leaders agreed to the offer, and the deal was completed in July 2009. This meant Saeco became part of the Philips family.
Cool Inventions by Saeco
Saeco has made many important contributions to coffee machine technology over the years.
- In 1996, they introduced the "cappuccinatore." This part helps make perfect foam for cappuccinos.
- In 1999, they added "SBS" technology. This system automatically adjusts the brewing pressure for better coffee.
- More recently, in 2013, Saeco announced the GranBaristo Avanti. This was a very modern coffee machine that could connect to your phone using Bluetooth!
Saeco Today
Even though Philips owned Saeco for a while, some changes happened later. In 2017, Philips sold the part of Saeco that made professional coffee machines. This part, which also included the Gaggia brand, was sold to an Italian company called N&W Global Vending SpA. This company is a leader in vending machines for drinks and snacks.
The professional coffee machines are still made in the original factory in Gaggio Montano, Italy. However, the part of Saeco that makes coffee machines for homes is still owned by Philips. In November 2017, N&W Global Vending SpA changed its name to Evoca Group. So, today, the Saeco brand is split between Philips (for home machines) and Evoca Group (for professional machines).
